Shakshuka - a popular North African dish

Shakshuka is a popular and easy to make North African dish. There are many ways to make a Shakshuka, yet in  general, it consists of eggs made on fresh and spicy tomato sauce. In addition, Shakshuka is always served in the pan it was made in and complemented with white bread.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup water
  • basic spices ((salt, pepper, cumin))
  • 1 green pepper
  • hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Heat a medium sized pan with two tablespoons of oil in it.
  2. Chop an onion into very small pieces and add to the hot pan.
  3. Add two cloves of chopped garlic.
  4. Add two chopped tomatoes and one chopped green pepper to the onion, once you noticed the onion's turned gold in colour. If you want the shakshuka to be spicy, add a tablespoon of your favorite hot sauce or chili powder. At this point you should also add a sausage or any other ingredient to make your shakshuka a bit more creative and interesting (see tips section).
  5. Wait for 5 minutes.
  6. Add 1/2 a cup of hot water and some salt, pepper and cumin. While the pan is covered, let the sauce work itself for a while - anywhere between 10 and 20 minutes - depends on how you like your shakshuka.
  7. Stir the sauce occasionally.
  8. Add two unscrambled eggs on top of the sauce and cover the pan again. As soon as the egg whites turn white, the shakshuka is ready for serving.
  9. Serve the shakshuka in the pan, along with white bread.

Notes

Tips

  • There are many ways to make a shakshuka. One of the most popular versions is Shakshuka with sausage. Simply slice the sausage to medium size pieces and add it to the sauce along with the tomatoes. Experiment with your shakshuka and add to it whatever ingredients your heart and stomach desire.
  • Remember that traditionally the shakshuka has to be served in the pan that it was made of and therefore, it is usually an individual dish. For multiple people, you will either have to use multiple pans or have all the people eat from one big pan.
  • Shakshuka is served with white bread that should be used for dipping in the tomato sauce in which the eggs were made.

Warnings

  • If you do serve the shakshuka in the hot pan, make sure to warn the people of the hot pan.
  • Make sure you put the hot pan on an appropriate platform.
